THE DURABILITY STUDY OF THE USE OF MODIFIED WASTE PLASTIC-BITUMEN IN ASPHALT CONCRETE MIX CONTAINING RECLAIMED ASPHALT PAVEMENT

ABSTRAK

Durability properties of asphalt mixture are an important criterion to ensure that the pavement materials maintain its desired properties. The objective of this study is to investigate the  effect of waste plastic as a modifier in bitumen and Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) as an  ggregate substitution on durability of asphalt concrete. Waste plastic (HDPE) was used to modify 60/70 pen grade. The all specimens used the optimum bitumen content of 6% and waste plastic bad as modifier in bitumen was 1.5%. Three types of bituminous mixes were evaluated (i) a control mix  ontaining virgin material (ii) a mix with bitumen modified using waste HDPE plastic and (iii) a mix containing modified bitumen and 30 and 60% RAP Tests used in assessment of moisture susceptibility were Marshall stability and the Indirect Tensile Stiffness Modulus. Cantabro test was used to assess disintegration resistance of aggregate mix. Waste plastic as modifier had a significant effect on the durability of asphalt concrete, which modified bitumen used in mix exhibited better than conventional mix. However, the addition of RAP has a negative effect on durability in terms of in terms of resistance to disintegration Test results showed that the use of waste plastic as modifier in bitumen for asphalt concrete offer the potential of durable, longer lasting road
