Pineapple Fruit Waste Utilization as Edible Paper Applications

ABSTRAK

Indonesia  is a potential fruit producing countries where the fruit productivity from year to year has increased, particularlyin Java. Indirectly this affects the amount of produced fruit waste generation, so it is necessary to find solutions to this problem. One of utilizations of fruit waste is as raw material to produce the paper, by utilizing Acetobacterxylinum bacterium. In this research, the waste used is pineapple waste. The purpose of the study was to investigate the impact of variations in substrate concentration andduration of fermentation time. The parameters analyzed include BOD5, COD, ash, weight (GSM), tensile strength and tear strength of paper. The research was conducted by a laboratory scale batch reactor system operated at room temperature 250 C -270 C with a pH of 4.2. The best results obtained for removal efficiency of BOD 5 and COD are 55.4% and 60% respectively. While the best results obtained for nata layer is 4.5 mm with the characteristic of the resulting paper is thin paper with the value of the gramatur is 30.7 ± 0.8 g/m2. Tensile strength is 1.35 ± 0.09 kN/m and tear strength values of 71.3 ± 1.7 mN. Based on the experimental results it can be concluded that a pineapple waste handling as paper can be done, to produce a quality paper with a designation as tissue paper.
