Produksi Etanol Secara Continue dengan Sel Tertambat Menggunakan Bioreactor Tower Fluidized Bed

ABSTRAK

The need of ethanol in Indonesia increases each year because of its wide use. One of its use is, as fuel aditives which comes from renewable material. Ethanol industry that has been developing is the ethanol which is produced from fermentation process (bioethanol). Ethanol or ethyl alcohol (C2H5OH) is organic compound which is very important in chemical industry and it has many benefits in human life. Thus, we need the innovation of ethanol fermentation technology which can produce the ethanol with good quality and quantity. There are two processes of ethanol production, chemical synthesis and fermentation. The difficulty in fermentation process is the separation between product and microorganism. Immobilized cell method considered to solve that problem and the use of volcanic stone as immobilized media can be an alternative. Fermentation process can be done by using bioreactor tower, fixed bed or fluidized bed. Fermentation process by using fluidized bed has some advantages. The advantages are the immobillized cell has a dinamic characteristic which allows more contact with substrate and better heat transfer. The purposes of this research are to decide the best condition by analyzing ethanol concentration and yield of ethanol production from glucose fermentation continuously in bioreactor tower fluidized bed and use Schizosacharomyces pombe with immobilized cell method with volcanic stone as immobilized media. This research will use many varieties, size of volcanic stone, these are 8/12, 18/20 and 30/40 mesh and the time of fermentation is 2 day. Fermentation process will be in the anaerob condition with the temperature 34°C, pH 4,5 and 150 g/L glucose concentration. Retention time substrat 48 hours and total height of biocatalyst 20 cm. based on concentration, productivity, and yield ethanol, the best condition in this experiment occurred in the pumice side 30/40 mesh which produced ethanol concentration 16,41%v/v , ethanol productivity was 2,715 g/L.hour, and % yield ethanol was 4,3.
