PERBAIKAN METODA PEMBELAJARAN PEMODELAN SISTEM UNTUK MENINGKATKAN KEMAMPUAN MAHASISWA DALAM PENGUASAAN MATERI

ABSTRAK

System Modeling is a required course in the curricullum of Industrial Engineering Department ITENAS. Up to recently, the method used was presentation by lecture using OHP. From the evaluation by the students, it was identified that the slidedhand-out used were not well-understood, merely an outlines, not well-systematic, and not interesting, and the teaching method.technique was boring. Meanwhile, data from even semester 2002/2003 and odd semester 2003/2004 was showing decreasing percentage of students with grade A, about 30%) although the success rate was relatively high (about 80%). The high rate of success was mostly influenced by the big factor of assignments evaluation and the ormative reference used by the scoring system- based on the condition of class’ scores population. The evaluation of assignments was relatively looser because it stressed on the assessment of the student’s efforts. The objectives of this research are: I) to improve teaching-learning method in System Modeling course to make the course more interesting and students’s capability of mastering the subjects improving, 2) to improve the scoring system in System Modeling course related to the improved teaching-learning method. Steps in this research are: I) evaluating TIU (general instructional objectives) and TIK (specific instructional objectives) for each of subject, 2) determination of teaching-learning method for each of subject, 3) design of helper tools for the teaching-learning method, 4) design of evaluation tools to measure teaching-learning result, and 5) implementation and discussion. From TIU and TIK, the competences to be established in System Modeling course are understanding capability (3 first subjects) and application (6 next subjects). The designed teaching-learning method are presentation method using power point slides and mind map, audio visual (movie show) method, computer simulation method, and student worksheet (LKM method to be done individually and by group. Measurement of teaching learning result is conducted by using questionnaires of teaching-learning evaluation and the final score is calculated by using formula 30% mid test score + 30%final test score + 30% average of LKMs ‘ scores + 10% average of quiz score. After implementation and analysis it is concluded that the teaching-learning method designed and applied at System Modeling course in Year 2009206 is better than the teaching-learning method applied at System Modeling course in the previous years (2002/2003 and 2003/2004), based on the percentage of success rate, distribution of final grade; giving more satisfaction. level to students and quite helping students to understand the materials. To improve student’s capability in understanding, the audio visual method using movie show is better than presentation by lecture using mind map and power point slide. The percentage of students saying that movie show is less or not helping them to understand materials is the smallest (about 3%)) while for other methods percentage of students saying that they are less helping to understand materials is about 5% to 30%. To improve student’s capability in application, the LKM method is considered good based on the teaching-learning evaluation questionnaires 1 and 2. Only about 6% – 13% students said that LKM method is less helping to understand materials. The new scoring system, that is scoring system considering LKM score and quiz score, is very important to motivate the students to do the LKM and to repeat learning the materials at home to prepare themselves for instant quiz.
