Effect of Timber Industrial Ash (TIA) on Water Quality of Cement – Lined Pipes

ABSTRAK

This paper presents a comparative study of water quality of two types of pipes; OPC pipes and TIA cement lined pipes. The TIA cement-lined pipes were developed as an environmentally friendly pipe material because it contains ten percent Timber Industrial ash (TIA) to replace the ordinary Portland cement (OX). The basic material formulations for both pipes are 0.5:1.0:2.0 for water: OPC: sand ratio. The physical characteristics of TIA cement-lined pipes indicated similarity with the OPC with water permeability of 1 x 10-11 m/s and compressive strength of 31 N/mm2. Tests indicated that TIA has no effect on the physical quality of water kept in the cement-lined pipe. However, chemical parameters such as copper, iron and manganese were excessive. Therefore TIA cement-lined pipe need further studies such as leachability tests before adoption for practical applications.
